Flor adds to Borough Market’s dining scene
The owners of east London eatery Lyle’s are opening a new, European-inspired bakery-cum-restaurant south of the river
The team behind Lyle’s in Shoreditch are this month opening their second venture with Flor, an all-day bakery, restaurant and wine bar in the centre of Borough Market. Owners John Ogier and James Lowe – also the restaurants’ head chef – have taken inspiration from the informal buvettes of Paris and the pintxo bars of San Sebastián, with a focus on sourdough bread, viennoiserie and seasonal produce. The wine list, much of which is available by the glass, is sourced from agriculturally responsible producers.
Throughout the working week, Flor will open at 8am, serving pastries and sweet breads such as caramel-filled brioche, kouign-amann and raw cream buns (from £3). Lunch dishes include raw scallop with preserved gooseberry and green tomato, or white asparagus, honey and walnuts (from £7). In the evening, the kitchen will serve plates including burrata, Cornish pollock brandade and whole Dover sole. To finish, there’s a choice of individual chocolate sabayon tarts or simple desserts made with fruit picked from a farm in Sussex.
On Saturdays, Flor will be open for brunch from 10am, with a menu featuring coddled eggs with trout roe and za’atar; purple sprouting broccoli with cured egg and kipper butter; or eggy bread with maple and black pudding.
