Duck & Waffle’s special new midnight-feast menu

The dishes at this one-night-only dinner are designed to satisfy late-night cravings

Five years after opening, gourmet 24-hour London restaurant Duck & Waffle is holding its first-ever midnight feast (£85) on Wednesday August 9 as it launches a new late-night menu.

“The dishes have been designed specifically to satisfy sweet and savoury midnight cravings,” says chef director Dan Doherty. “Our late-night services have been getting busier and busier and we wanted to add some new dishes exclusively for this time of evening. There’s the salt beef grilled cheese, inspired by the Reuben sandwich and late-night eating in New York, and a spicy lamb burger that I had on the menu as a slider a few years ago and went down a storm.”

Served family style, each dish will be paired with creative cocktails, such as a beetroot and cacao liqueur with sparkling wine for the starters, which include barbecued spiced crispy pig ears, bacon-wrapped dates with linguiça, manchego and mustard, and cumin-spiced poppadoms served with a split-pea dip.

For the mains – all served in Duck & Waffle’s private dining room on the 40th floor of Heron Tower, providing spectacular views of the capital – cravings will be crushed by a spicy ox cheek doughnut with apricot jam and smoked paprika sugar, and by a jaw-dropping harissa lamb burger with pickled red onion and ranch dressing, served on a brioche bun. Naturally, the signature duck and waffle (confit duck leg, fried duck egg and mustard maple syrup) will make an appearance, paired with a glass of preserved strawberry leaf concentrate, while the new pork and apple corndog with chipotle mayonnaise and gherkins looks like a classic in the making. And for non-meat eaters, there will be smoked salmon with pickled cucumber, or a spring-vegetable salad with smoked mozzarella, buckwheat and ranch dressing, washed down with a long whisky and ginger cocktail.

The finale will star a chocolate fondant with peanut-butter ganache and caramelised banana waffle with homemade hazelnut and chocolate spread and vanilla ice cream. For those in need of perking up, the night will end with an espresso martini – or, for those craving nothing more than a pillow and some shuteye, a caffeine-free (ex)presso martini with dandelion coffee, and chicory and birch-bark liqueur.
